Join us in flooding the Treasury with twitter messages

By Pontus Westerberg, 8 December 2011

Over the last year, nearly 20,000 WDM supporters and campaigners have written to Treasury ministers demanding that the UK support proposed EU regulations to curb commodity speculation.

But while most other European countries have yet to decide what they will do, the UK, led by chancellor George Osborne, is predictably digging its heels in and siding with the banks. This is why we created The Real George Osborne comedy series, which has been hugely successful in terms of mainstreaming the issue of food speculation and reaching policy makers in Westminster with our campaign message.

So far in this campaign we’ve used a broad range of campaign tactics. We’ve met with ministers, MPs and MEPs to tell them about the catastrophic consequences on global hunger from excessive food speculation. Thousands of people have phoned the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and written to the chancellor. And we’ve built a coalition of organisations to campaign on the issue across Europe.

But now we want to try something different.

Join our Twitter storm!

On Friday 9 December, activists from all over the UK will be flooding the @HMTreasury Twitter account with messages about food speculation. Please join us. All you need to do is to tweet the Treasury and tell it we need strong regulation.

Please use the hashtag #foodspeculation if you join us. Here are some suggested tweets:

Dear @hmtreasury, will George Osborne do the right thing and regulate #foodspeculation? Or will he side with the banks? http://j.mp/v73xf0

Hi @hmtreasury, the public wants George Osborne to regulate #foodspeculation. Will he do it? http://j.mp/v73xf0

Hi @hmtreasury, What will George Osborne do? Help millions out of hunger? Or stay pals with his banker chums? http://j.mp/viM02M

Please help us spread the word and get other people to join in too by tweeting this blogpost.

If you haven’t emailed George yourself, it would be great if you can do it now too.

Thanks!
