Recently I joined members of Cardiff’s local WDM group to meet an influential member of the European parliament. Kay Swinburne, former investment banker and MEP for Wales, is one of just seven parliamentarians (out of a total of more than 700) who will be sat around the negotiating table in a month’s time when the final stage of negotiations on legislation to tackle food speculation kick off.

This morning, staff from aptly named investment management company ‘BlackRock’ arrived at their swanky London offices to be greeted by waiters holding silver trays, laden with what looked like luxury chocolates. As people approached to take our Carbon Rocher, they were disappointed to find they were actually being offered lumps of coal.

'Viva La Via Campesina! Viva!' is the rallying call of the vibrant international movement which represents over 200 million peasants, small-scale producers, indigenous people and farm workers across the world. I had the privilege of attending La Via Campesina's sixth international conference in Jakarta which also coincided with their 20th anniversary celebrations. A gathering of over 500 delegates representing 70 countries, with a diversity of cultures and languages yet firmly united in their struggle against the neo-liberal system that is increasing its domination over the food system.
