Yesterday, Rich Ricci, the appropriately-named chief executive of Barclays' corporate and investment arm, told the parliamentary commission on banking standards that the bank was thinking of pulling out of agricultural commodities trading. But what does this mean for our campaign against food speculation?

A journey into the twitter-sphere by a previously reluctant group member: "Having carefully avoided this question for more months than I care to remember, through not wanting to spend still more time on a computer, a colleague’s comment after a lobby meeting got me thinking".

Is a concern for global justice just for the middle class? Does being poor mean you have to prioritise helping yourself?

I don't think so, and have the evidence!

Last week EquityBD, one of WDM's global allies working on economic justice, human rights and environmental issues in Bangladesh, sent us a report. The report told us that on Thursday 15 November, civil society groups and climate networks in Bangladesh joined together to protest the World Bank’s recent announcement that it would retain control of the Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund (BCCRF).

We would like to pay tribute to the life of Lara Marsh, who was WDM’s Events Officer from 2000 – 2002. Lara died tragically on 31st August this year, aged 37, having been diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2011.

Anyone who came into contact with Lara will remember how infectious her passion, inspiration and humour were. She joined WDM just as our campaign to stop the GATS trade agreement was picking up speed and set to work to find creative ways to involve WDM groups and activists in the campaign.

The Oxford WDM group held a talk on the many dimensions of poverty with Sabina Alkire, director of the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI). Here is an account of the event by Kate Griffin from the Oxford group.

I watched Greenpeace's brilliant undercover video this week with a real mixture of emotions. On the one hand, I was impressed at the hidden camera expose and pleased we've now got evidence of the real agenda of bankbench Conservative MPs to undermine action on climate change. But on the other hand, I was profoundly depressed.

On 8 November the Milton Keynes WDM group took part in a panel discussion and ran a workshop at the Global Development Conference: The Millennium Development Goals - 'Are we nearly there yet?'. Read Pauline's account of what it was like to take part, and whether it was worth doing.

For four days culminating yesterday, eight members of WDM’s network and staff took part in Firenze 10+10 in Florence, Italy. Here three of us reflect on our experiences.

Last night was WDM's third Joking for Justice comedy benefit gig.

I’ve taken part in and supported social justice and environmental campaigns intermittently since earliest University, and their issues have been the subject of many a blogpost.  That said, I don’t consider myself an experienced campaigner.

On Friday I was privileged to join five well-informed WDM supporters from the Tunbridge Wells constituency for an important meeting. The group were going to see their MP, Greg Clark, who also happens to be financial secretary to the treasury - the minister with responsibility for regulating food speculation.

Last Saturday, over 100,000 people marched through the streets of London for the TUC march: A future that works. They were calling for an end to the austerity that is being forced upon this country by the ConDem government. WDM staff and group members were there to show our opposition to cuts which see the most hard-up in our society pay the price for a banking collapse for which they are not blame.

At last! A meeting last Friday with an MEP, an influential one, about the European parliament's moves to tighten their grip on food speculation (as well as other commodities trading).
