Welcome to WDM Brighton and Hove Group
We are a large and lively group, welcoming a wide range of members to our monthly meetings. We usually have a guest speaker or presentation each month, as well as planning and reporting on actions and upcoming events. You are welcome to come along.
We are fortunate in that we meet at BPEC (Brighton Peace and Environment Centre) which is close to Brighton station and is shared by a number of other activist groups with whom we have links.
Tug-of-war in central Brighton!

On 20th June 2009 our group held a tug-of-war between dirty coal power & renewable energy to highlight government plans for a new coal power station at Kingsnorth in Kent.

Brighton & Hove WDM have become partners with IT Skills 4 Rural Kenya.which transforms rural villages in Kenya into centres for economic empowerment and development. IT skills 4 rural Kenya is a registered charity run on an entirely voluntary basis. However, its work has been welcomed by the UN and Kenyan Government who have both asked ITS4RK to continue and expand its work.ITS4RK is an organisation that lives and breathes rural Kenya. It was set up by Kenyans in the Diaspora. The two villages we are currently working with - Kibugat in the Rift Valley Province and Antubochiu in the Eastern Province - are, respectively, the home villages of two of the trustees, Edward Kibosek and Jac Munoru.
We hope to be able to provide publicity for the charity and to gain a better understanding of what life is like for people on the front line of economic development in rural Africa. Please go to www.itskills4ruralKenya.org and, if you can, help to support Edward's charity.

Is Corporate Power Cooking The Planet?
Public Meeting & Workshop - Wednesday 16th April 2008, 7:30pm
Come to the Brighthelm Centre, North Road, Brighton for a dynamic, thought-provoking public meeting on corporate-led methods of dealing with climate change.
As the world wakes up to the reality of climate change - and its impact on the poor - so too are emerging supposed solutions such as carbon trading, carbon offsetting and bio-fuels.
Hear more about how exactly corporate globalisation is preventing us tackling climate change, and find out how to join the campaign to stop climate injustice.
There'll also be an opportunity to have a cup of tea with representatives from Brighton-based businesses, campaigners and interested members of the public who want to discuss how we can all work together to bring about effective government action in leading the way to a low carbon economy. ALL WELCOME!
Sat 5th April 2008 - our BIG day of action on the climate bill

We co-organised a demonstration in Pavilion Gardens on 5 April 2008 to call for aviation and shipping CO2 emissions to be included in the climate change bill. Over 100 people from various campaigning groups attended, plus a samba band, flight attendants, human aeroplanes - and a 20-foot inflatable plane, "Gordon Brown", two councillors and MPs Celia Barlow and Des Turner (pictured). The MPs said they would push for the amendments in parliament - let's hope they keep up the pressure.
Thanks to everyone who turned up and made the day such a great success.

WDM Brighton and Hove twinned with buyemba.org!
WDM Brighton and Hove have linked with Buyemba, a small charity set up by Annette Mbedha to support the villagers of Butansi in Uganda.
Buyemba has helped to set up programs to pay for childrens' education and adult literacy classes, is involved in HIV/Aids programs and is hoping to build a community centre in the village.
We hope to be able to provide publicity for the charity and to gain a better understanding of what life is like for people on the front line of climate change and international trade laws.
Please go to www.buyemba.org and, if you can, help to support Annette's charity.
