2007 Activities

In our May meeting we heard from Richard Beya and friends about the appalling situation in the Congo and the hospital he is supporting. Our group meeting in September tackled climate change and led to our watching a film on the same subject in December.

We have been investigating marketing strategies, which have included working with other organisations. We held joint meetings with the Bristol Zimbabwe Association in June and in October, the second of which included the film, ‘Mugabe’s Reign of Terror’, and a discussion with its producer and presenter. Our monthly newsletter has advertised events organised by other groups as well as our own.

We held a public meeting on climate change in February with WDM speaker Leila Dean and took part in a workshop in April on the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade where we were reminded of the various ways in which the evils of that trade continue in the trafficking of women and the exploitation of children and vulnerable adults.

Stalls have been held at the University Latin America Forum, the Amnesty Garden Party, an Oxfam conference on climate change and an event at Redland United Reformed Church. In November we helped the national office host a campaigners’ gathering at St Werburgh’s Community Centre.

Individual members of the group have lobbied their MPs on the current issues and have spoken on behalf of WDM at meetings of other organisations.

Welcome to the new Bristol group page. We will add content this month!
