Go on Gordon – time to get tough on climate change
Hundreds of millions of people from the poorest parts of the world are threatened with increased flooding, food and water shortages, and disease. Justice demands that the rich countries that caused climate change must cut their greenhouse gases first and fastest.
But because of the growth in flying, UK emissions are actually rising. And instead of dealing with the problem, the government is pretending aviation emissions don’t count by excluding most of them from its climate change bill.
The climate change bill is now passing through parliament. It presents a unique opportunity to enshrine into law the frameworks within which the UK will reduce its emissions. But the proposed climate change bill is far too weak, and people in developing countries will pay the price – unless we can persuade Gordon Brown to strengthen it.
A strong climate change bill must include three things:
1. A carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction target of at least 80 per cent by 2050.
2. International aviation and shipping emissions included in the reduction targets.
3. Annual targets for reduction in CO2 emissions.
Because Gordon Brown doesn't have a publicly accessible email address, we'll keep a copy of your message and hand them in with the climate action cards.
