Tell Gordon Brown to put a stop to a new generation of dirty coal power.

In the next few months, Gordon Brown will be responsible for deciding whether to give the go ahead to Kingsnorth, the UK’s first new coal fired power station in over 20 years. Coal is the dirtiest way of generating electricity and Kingsnorth would emit as much carbon as the whole of Ghana.

Climate change threatens the poorest people in the world the most – the people who themselves are least responsible for creating the problem in the first place.

We will deliver the letter with your signatures to Gordon Brown	Dear Prime Minister, Climate change is hitting the world's poorest people and most vulnerable ecosystems first and worst. Industrialised countries like the UK must cut their carbon emissions first and fastest if we are to avert this. We therefore strongly support your recently announced target to massively expand the UK's renewable energy capacity to help reduce UK carbon emissions. However, in the next few months you will take arguably the most important decision on climate change of your premiership - whether to give the green light to a new coal-fired power station at Kingsnorth (Kent) which will not be fitted with the means to capture and store carbon dioxide emissions from the outset. If the power station goes ahead, seven more are likely to follow. Britain will be locked into decades of high carbon emissions and you will see your ambitions to create a low carbon economy go up in smoke. Your efforts to achieve an effective global deal on climate change will also be seriously undermined; we cannot expect countries like China to agree to tackle their reliance on coal when we are extending our own. There is an alternative. Instead of supporting the one global industry that does most to cause climate change, you could invest in a developing a strong home grown renewable energy industry and send a strong signal to the international community that the UK is prepared to help lead the transition to a low carbon future for our world. In making this transition you will prove the case internationally that action to tackle the inseparable challenges of climate change and fossil fuel-addiction will protect the environment, create new jobs and increase energy security. As a member of the UK's largest coalition committed to tackling climate change, I call on you to halt the development of new coal-fired power stations that do not have full carbon capture from the outset and instead urgently kick start a programme of action to maximise the UK's energy efficiency and renewable energy supply.
