Coal and climate change:

The old kingsnorth power station

Kingsnorth power station and new coal

In March 2008 the government will decide whether Kingsnorth in Kent will have the first new coal-fired power station in the UK for decades. Yet of all fuels, coal is the most polluting - even worse than oil or gas.

Kingsnorth power-station alone will release more CO2 each year than Ghana.

It will not use carbon capture technology, and so will contribute to climate change that is already hitting the world’s poor first and hardest. For the UK to be encouraging growth in the dirtiest fuel, instead of promoting the switch to a low carbon future, is madness in an era of impending climate crisis.
