Stop the Bangladesh coal mine

Update: On the 24th April Tim Jones from WDM and Jennifer Kalafut from the International Accountability Project (IAP) attended the Barclays AGM and demanded Barclays disassociated itself from the project because of environmental and social concerns.

Dear John Varley, Group Chief Executive of Barclays Bank I am writing to ask Barclays to withdraw its share stake in Global Coal Management (GCM). GCM wants to build an open-cast mine in Phulbari, North-West Bangladesh. If this mine is built it will force over 40,000 people off their land, damage the water supply of a further 100,000 and take away land vital for food production. Local people do not want this open-cast coal mine and three people have already been killed in protests to resist it. The Asian Development Bank has recently withdrawn $100 million of financial backing from the project because of environmental and social concerns. GCM, however are insistent on continuing with the project. WDM has corresponded directly with GCM and remain unsatisfied that they are taking the appropriate action to protect the people and the environment of Bangladesh. If Barclays is truly committed to the Equator Principles that it has signed up to, it is impossible for Barclays to be associated with this type of project. We call on you to follow the lead set by the Asian Development Bank and remove your association with this project. I look forward to hearing from you.
