Don’t undermine Bangladesh
Royal Bank of Scotland sells its shares in Global Coal Management.
British bank Royal Bank of Scotland has sold its shares in Global Coal Management Resources, the British company behind the Phulbari project. In August 2008, 110 organisations from across the world wrote to RBS calling on them to sell their shares.
The World Development Movement’s Policy Officer, Tim Jones, said: “RBS have joined Barclays and the Asian Development Bank in distancing themselves from this mine which would destroy the livelihood of tens of thousands of people. It is now up to Gareth Thomas and the UK government to do the same.”
Update: UK government withdraws support for the mine. More
Please support our campaign to stop the UK government from backing an open-cast mine that threatens thousands of lives.
People in an already-poor area of Bangladesh, Phulbari, will be left struggling to find food and shelter unless we take immediate action. It is estimated that more than 40,000 will face resettlement and the water supply of 100,000 could be contaminated.
We need you to take urgent action against this outrage today by making a donation to ensure we can continue this vital campaign, and by demanding that the UK government withdraws it's support for the mine.
Zakir Kibria, an activist from Bangadesh, wants WDM supporters in the UK to support local people in the area, who are very concerned about the devastating impacts a mine will have on their lives and the environment.
Activists in Bangladesh face police brutality and intimidation - one recent protest ended in the death of three people. That’s why we need you to do as much as you can to help in the UK.
We’ve already made progress. Following a campaign where WDM supporters emailed Barclays earlier this year, the bank sold their shares in Global Coal Management, the company planning the mine. Read more.

The poorest people of Bangladesh will suffer at the hands of a start up UK corporation, who want to mine our land and destroy our environment for profit. Phulbari communities gave a verdict written in blood that they do not want the mine. Please campaign with the people of Phulbari to stop it
