Stop Europe's damaging trade deals

Europe’s trade policies put big business before the interests of people and the environment.

They will particularly harm the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world: destroying jobs, small-scale industries and the livelihoods of small farmers, as well as increasing environmental exploitation and human rights abuses.

Inside Europe, these policies are undermining job security, privatising our public services and promoting the exploitation of migrant workers.

And all this is being done to help big business secure big profits.

Now there is a new Trade Commissioner and with the rest of the EU Commission due to be replaced in 2009, we have a chance for a new approach. We must start campaigning now to make them scrap the current policies and seize this opportunity to turn European trade around.

Dear President Barroso Despite the controversy and resistance surrounding recent trade deals, the European Commission continues to steer Europe into more and more damaging free trade agreements. As the financial crisis has made clear, we cannot just keep removing regulations from companies and giving them the freedom to do what they want. If this is allowed to continue, millions of people will be pushed further into poverty, losing their jobs and livelihoods and seeing their public services and their environment continue to deteriorate. I want to see a new approach to trade that truly supports human rights and long-term, sustainable development. The time has come to turn European trade policy around. I urge you to: • Stop ongoing negotiations for trade deals with Africa, Asia and Latin America • Commit before October 2009 to undertake a full-scale rethink of EU trade policy to ensure it prioritises development, environmental sustainability and human (particularly women’s) rights in poor countries • Open up European trade policy processes to enable better democratic accountability and scrutiny by parliamentarians and civil society.
