Stop Biwater's attempt to sue one of the poorest countries in the world
Tanzania is the one of the poorest countries in the world:
- 60 per cent of the population live on less than £1.40 a day
- Tanzania has a total debt of £4.4 billion
- 9.8 million Tanzanians do not have access to safe water (28 per cent)
Biwater is a UK company with an annual turnover of £160 million that provides water services around the world.
Early this year the Tanzanian Government spectacularly terminated a water privatisation contract with Biwater just two years into a ten year contract on the grounds that they had failed to improve water supplies.
Now Biwater has launched a legal action at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes at the World Bank, on the grounds that the Government of Tanzania expropriated City Water’s resources and failed to grant the company “fair and equitable treatment.” This action will take years to resolve.
This legal action will take up considerable resources of the Tanzanian Government which it can ill afford.
This action is now closed: thanks to all who took part.
Write a message of solidarity to the people of Tanzania, as the case brought against the Tanzanian government by Biwater is dragged through the courts.
