Tell the EU to go public on water

(français)

2007 marks the half way point to meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Goal number seven aims to halve the amount of people with no access to clean water. Yet one billion people still lack access. Privatisation has failed the world’s poor, whilst there are many examples of how water utilities can be better reformed under public ownership.

This year the UK government took steps to support public solutions to the global water crisis and now the World Development Movement wants the European Union (EU) to do the same. The EU is the world’s biggest aid donor. Each year it spends millions on water and sanitation.

But it's time for the EU to ‘go public’ on solutions to tackle the global water crisis.

This action has now closed - Thank you to everyone who took part

Louis Michel, the European Commissioner for Trade was lobbied by over 600 WDM members who urged him to support public solutions to the global water crisis. Since this campaign, Vicky Cann, WDM’s Policy Campaigns Officer and other NGOs, have met with the European Commission in Brussels to discuss the best way forward for the Commission to support public public partnerships (PUPs). The European Commission have now made public their intention to support public utilities in Africa. This is good news and WDM will monitor the situation and will let you know if further action is needed.
