Water is essential to life. We need water to drink, to wash, to cook with, to help us grow food and to drive our industries. But climate change is jeopardising already fragile freshwater sources across the world.
Water is also a factor in conflict. When countries and corporations abuse water resources, tensions are raised as neighbouring countries lose out. With climate change comes a growing risk of international water conflict.
But future water wars can be averted by governments and corporations respecting the rights and needs of others. Right now there is no globally recognised framework to enable countries to work together to look after shared waters like rivers and lakes. The UN convention on watercourses could change that. We urgently need the UK government to ratify the convention and use its global influence to ensure that others do the same. Please sign our petition to Gareth Thomas MP, the minister responsible, and help to make sure that the world’s water resources remain a source of life and not death.

This action has now closed - thanks to everyone who took part. We handed in the mosaic to Gareth Thomas MP. Read more

You could say (but don't cut and paste):
There are 4 billion people living in countries threatened by future water wars.
The UN Convention on Watercourses could help by creating an international framework to settle disputes over water.
I am really concerned that the UK’s Department for International Development has no plans to sign up to the UN Convention on Watercourses. The UK co-sponsored this UN convention in 1997, now they must accede to it.
