World Cup 2006: Who Should I Cheer For?

"WDM is an outstanding organisation - independent, clever in its campaigning, meticulous in its research, and angry. Its important work deserves our support."

WDM Death Clock

This year the World Development Movement became the first anti-poverty campaign group to have a presence in Second Life, an online 3 dimensional world, consisting of 1.6 million users enjoying an escapist alternative reality.

WDM's message was a simple one - remember the real world. One of WDM's creations in Second Life is a virtual death clock, that records the number of children who have died as a result of preventable global poverty since Second Life was founded.

The death counter can be found in Warmouth (slurl).

Child deaths due to world poverty since June 23rd 2003 - the day Second Life went active..

We want to remind people in this virtual world what's happening in the real world right now.
These deaths are preventable - it just takes action.

Founded in 1970, WDM campaigns to tackle the root causes of poverty. WDM believes that charity is not enough and aims to change the policies that keep the developing world poor. It is a democratic and politically independent organisation with 15,000 supporters and a strong role for its 100 local groups across the UK.

WDM was a founder of the Fairtrade Foundation, Jubilee 2000 and Make Poverty History and the Trade Justice Movement.
