Campaign for climate compensation, not loans

Severino Cortez Bilbao, a farmer and community leader from the indigineous Khapi community, lives at the foot of the Illimani glacier, which overlooks Bolivia’s capital, La Paz. Hundreds of communities like his depend on the glacier as their main source of water.

But the life-giving glacier is rapidly disappearing as global temperatures increase.

Severino is worried:

If Illimani dries up, we’ll be forced to leave this community; we depend entirely on this little bit of water that comes from Illimani. Without water, there is no more life.

For him, water is not the only problem. For over ten years now, people in the Khapi community have noticed an increase in diseases, unpredictable crop patterns and ever stronger sun, burning more fiercely than before at the high altitude.

Despite these very real threats to some of the poorest people in Bolivia, and around the world, the UK is still not taking its responsibility to help the world’s poorest countries deal with climate change seriously.
