You are currently considering whether to allow a new generation of coal-fired power stations, yet scientists agree they would lead to more climate change, harming the poorest most vulnerable people on the planet. The last few weeks have shown that a wide spectrum of the public and a great number of campaign groups are against these plans. Now even EON, the company involved in Kingsnorth power station in Kent, wants you to hold off until the consultation on ‘carbon capture readiness’ is complete. I am writing to demand that you heed these concerns, take this opportunity and put a freeze on plans for a power station at Kingsnorth until a full-scale review of UK coal policy,which puts the impact of climate change at its core, is carried out. We must have a full review of UK coal policy in light of the latest science on climate change. A review would show that new coal-fired power stations would lock the UK into decades of high carbon electricity generation. Relying on carbon capture and storage (CCS) to come to the rescue would be wildly irresponsible given at best it will not be available until 2020, and even the chancellor, Alistair Darling, says it may never work. As a result if you give the go-ahead to new coal power plants: • It will be almost impossible for the UK to cut its emissions by 40% by 2020 as scientists agree is necessary • It will be almost impossible for the UK to meet its proposed EU energy targets that will require more than 40% of our electricity to come from renewables by 2020 • It will undermine the UK’s ability to persuade other countries not to build new coal power plants • It will electricity customers in the future if the price of carbon rises I also believe the UK needs a moratorium on any new coal-fired power stations until the technology to capture and store the CO2 they release is fully operational and has proven to significantly reduce emissions.
