Dying Doha deserves mercy killing

21 June 2007

Commenting on the collapse of the latest round of WTO talks between the G4 (European Union, USA, Brazil and India) Peter Hardstaff, Head of Policy at the World Development Movement, said:

"The fact that the G4 were not able to stitch-up a deal amongst themselves and present this as a fait accompli to the rest of the WTO membership can only be seen as positive. The EU and US were trying to carve out an agreement that would benefit rich countries and a few larger developing countries and then bung a few quid in aid money at the poor to bribe them into signing up. This is a million miles away from the 'development round' that was promised. Given what is on the table, the fact that the Doha Round is on its last legs is welcome. We can only hope someone will see sense and finally kill it off."
