Workshop descriptions
Dirty Aid, Dirty Water
WDM has been running its Dirty Aid, Dirty Water campaign for 2½ years now, highlighting the push for water privatisation in poor countries and the campaign for public alternatives to tackle the global water crisis. This workshop is an opportunity to catch up with all we have achieved so far, and discuss the work there is still to do. In particular, we will highlight the links between water resources and climate change, and how the UK government could act to prevent future ‘water wars’.
The climate change bill – will it be strong enough to save the planet?
Come and learn more about the bill, its passage through parliament and what is needed in it for it to be effective. Learn practical skills on how you can help make the bill stronger from directly lobbying your MP to doing creative media stunts on climate change.
Can we buy our way out of climate change?
The world is slowly waking up to the reality of climate change, but methods for dealing with it such as carbon trading, carbon offsetting, and widespread use of biofuels are based on satisfying corporate interests and maintaining narrowly defined ‘growth’. This workshop will discuss how corporate globalisation is preventing us from tackling climate change properly, and what we can do about it.
Trade Justice – The New Frontier
Whatever happens in the current World Trade Organisation trade round, European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson has already set out a plan to target a range of developing countries for even more market opening. Through a series of bilateral and regional trade deals – the trade negotiator’s equivalent of splitting someone from their friends, taking them down a dark alley and trying to give them a kicking – the EU hopes to pursue its manifesto for multinationals. Is there a bulwark against this latest liberalisation push? Yes – it’s us. Find out more about the latest developments on trade.
Events that work for you
Events are a fantastic way of getting your campaign message out there, raising the profile of your group and attracting new members. Come along to hear about the nuts and bolts of putting together a good event, from initial ideas and fixing a budget, to publicity, logistics and evaluation. This interactive workshop will also include tips on running a stall and holding meetings.
Making change at the grassroots level
It can be easy to feel that our actions are too small to make a difference, but local activism has been crucial to all WDM’s campaign successes and we’re following in the footsteps of a long history of grassroots action. Come along to explore what connections you can make to build solidarity and achieve change at the grassroots level.
