Photo/interview opportunity: Gordon Brown, E.ON and Hilary Benn visit climate camp

Photo opportunity: Wednesday 6 Aug, 11.00am, at no new coal flags at climate camp.

Giant caricatures of Gordon Brown and Hilary Benn will be worn by campaigners. A faceless corporate man with E.ON branding will be embracing Gordon Brown, and smothering Hilary Benn.

Police, protesters and local people will be met by the bizarre sight of 2 cabinet members and a representative of E.ON paying a visit to climate camp.  Protesters wearing giant (65cm high, painted fibreglass) full-head masks of Gordon Brown, Hilary Benn and an E.ON representative will be addressed today (Wednesday) by local people from Kingsnorth Climate Action Medway (KCAM), who are at campaigning to stop Kingsnorth.

Andy Rogers, from Wainscott, spokesperson for KCAM sent this message to Prime Minister Gordon Brown:

“The Prime Minister must not be taken in by E.ON’s false promises – coal is dirty. Gordon Brown needs to realise that he cannot give the go ahead for new coal power stations in the UK and also claim that he is serious about fighting climate change in the same breath. The government must forget about investment in an old and dirty coal industry, and should concentrate on renewables, which will guarantee our energy security, provide new jobs, and keep the lights on. It will also mean that we can genuinely claim to be serious about stopping the dangerous climate change that will be disastrous for Kent and countries like Bangladesh alike.”

Notes to editors

Kingsnorth Climate Action Medway is a group of local people, local charities, local groups and local businesses who are committed to opposing the proposed development of a new coal fired power station at Kingsnorth, Medway.

We are concerned about climate change and the effects of pollution in our towns. We believe that there are greater benefits to come from closing the existing power station than from building a new one. We welcome new members to promote the work of the group and to reflect the diversity of Medway.
