Climate change bill: Queen's speech response
6 November 2007
Comment from the World Development Movement in response to the announcement of the climate change bill in the Queen’s Speech:
Benedict Southworth, director of the World Development Movement said:
“The target to reduce carbon emissions by 60% in the climate change bill simply isn’t enough to avoid disastrous consequences for the world’s poor. The government’s proposed ‘review’ of the target, after it has become law, looks like a delaying tactic in the face of compelling scientific evidence on the need for greater emissions cuts. Unless the Prime Minister toughens up on climate change, his credibility and reputation on tackling global poverty will be seriously undermined.”

Notes to Editors
WDM is calling for the climate change bill to: include carbon emission reduction targets of 80% by 2050 (not 60%) and 40% by 2020 (not 26 – 32%); to include the UK’s share of international aviation and shipping emissions in reduction targets, and to include annual targets for reduction in CO2 emissions.
