Welcome to WDM Portsmouth Group

The Portsmouth WDM group

We normally meet on the second Monday of each month at 7.30 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Bransbury Road, Eastney, Portsmouth.

Our next meeting will be on Monday 9th March. NB No February meeting.

We've got lots of ideas for action over the next few months (especially working on climate change, water and trade justice ) and it would be good to get more people and other local groups working with us.If you'd like to come to the meeting do contact us for a report on the last year and minutes.

New members are always welcome; why not just come along and find out more.

We share information, decide on letters to write, link with other organisations and plan action. We also produce a newsletter every couple of months; if you'd like to be on the mailing list just let us know.

For our campaign on Climate Change we are working closely with the Portsmouth Climate Action Network to spread the word about carbon emissions and to lobby local councillors. We can easily put you on the PCAN mailing list too if you like! Or see their website: www.portsmouthcan.co.uk

Some of the other ideas we have for the year include:

Planning events for One World Week in October. This year's theme is Hungry for One World and we are working on displays and events on a water and food theme. You can find out a lot more about One World Week if you check their website www.oneworldweek.org.

We have a meeting planned to look at One World Week 2009 on 23rd March in Committe Room K, Portsmouth Civic Offices at 6.00pm

Working with other groups on the Trade Justice campaigns.

Fairtrade Fortnight 23/2/09 to 8/3/09

Two billion people – a third of humanity – still survive on less than $2 a day. Unfair trade rules keep them in poverty, but they face the global challenges of food shortages and climate change too. Fairtrade is a people’s movement for change that aims to tip the balance of trade in favour of poor producers. We all need Fairtrade more than ever and we all have the power to create positive change for people and planet.

Fairtrade in the Portsmouth area

Portsmouth is now a Fairtrade City and there is an active group in the City.

You can find out more about what we do, including our action plan and details of local events on www.portsmouthfairtrade.org.uk

Gosport and Fareham are also Fairtrade Towns and Havant will be celebrating becoming a Fairtrade Borough on February 23rd.  Find out more on the website.

Change Today - Choose Fairtrade

Fairtrade products are becoming a great success story (there are over 4,500 now) but we still want to make sure people know about them and buy them.

Why not organise your own event of some kind (like a coffee morning). See the Fairtrade Foundation website www.fairtrade.org.uk where you can download an action guide which is full of ideas and see all the free resources available.

The local Fairtrade groups are pushing to persuade more cafes and restaurants to serve FT products so please help by asking for them whenever you get a chance. They'll be producing new guides, listing all the shops and cafes where you can find the products, so let them know if you can use copies.

They'd also like to see more schools taking on the challenge to become Fairtrade schools. There are loads of good ideas on www.fairtradeschools.net and members of the local group are happy to help. Contact us if you'd like to discuss this.
