Banks are creating new markets to gain control over our land, food, water and other natural resources.

This pursuit of profit is driving people in developing countries further into poverty.

Stop the financial sector gaining ever greater control

The livelihoods of families and farmers are threatened as banks and hedge funds drive up food prices through speculation and grab land to use as a financial asset. Ordinary people are being driven off land they have lived on for generations and are unable to afford food due to rising prices.

  • In the last five years, speculation in food markets has nearly doubled from £41billion to £80 billion.
  • Since 2001, an area the size of Western Europe has been bought or leased in developing countries by financial investors.

A donation of £30 or however much you can afford will help us fight the growing role of the finance sector in the developing world.

Finance companies are creating new markets in water, soil carbon and biodiversity, allowing investors to speculate much as they do on food.

This is a scandal. But you can make a difference in 2012. In June, UN representatives will meet in Rio to discuss the role of the finance sector in developing countries. This will be a key moment for us to oppose the actions of finance firms in poor countries and fight for positive solutions.

Your donation will ensure that we can challenge the finance sector and fight for positive alternatives. Thank you.

An MST demonstration with lots of red flags

Positive solutions

Across the world, small scale farmers and families are resisting the financial sector by developing new systems of their own.

In Brazil, the Landless Workers Movement (MST) is demonstrating alternatives to corporate dominated land ownership and food production, resettling families onto land where they produce food in a sustainable and equitable way.

The movement has settled 800,000 families onto reclaimed land. It has put pressure on Brazil’s leaders for agrarian reform to allow ordinary workers the freedom to provide for themselves, lifting them out of poverty.

By supporting our campaigns, you will be acting in solidarity with inspiring groups like the Landless Workers Movement.

We need to organise another model for agriculture, especially when it comes to access to food. This means democratising access to land, educating people and raising their consciousness. We want a society in which people are put before profits – social rights and food must become a priority.”
- Delwek, the Landless Workers Movement
