Respond to the government's energy announcment and stop dirty coal

Dear Secretary of State, I am disappointed by your decision to clear the way for two new dirty coal power stations to be built in the UK. Requiring a small amount of carbon capture on a traditional coal power station does not make it clean. The announcement of a new coal framework was a fantastic opportunity to set out a plan for ruling out emissions from coal power stations for good. I am sorry you have not taken the opportunity. Your own committee on climate change has said emissions for all coal power stations will need to be stopped by the early 2020s. I am concerned that you have failed to bring in a regulation to prevent emissions from all coal power stations, new and old, in the early 2020s. The UK government’s support for new dirty coal power stations will further erode the trust of developing countries in our commitment to creating a low carbon economy, just weeks before the crucial meetings in Copenhagen. I call on you to ensure that the government’s carbon capture demonstration projects are research into an as yet unproven technology, rather than a fig-leaf to let in new dirty coal power.
