How we worked out the World Cup supportability ranking and what it does and doesn’t mean

The ranking of countries on each of the ten issues comes from universally recognised sources such as the UN or World Bank and was not decided by WDM. The issues themselves were chosen by WDM based on the criteria that we as globally concerned football fans might consider when choosing who to support when our home team isn’t playing (or if they didn’t qualify). You can look at the ranking of every country for each of the ten separate criteria by clicking on the links on the left of the page.

To get an overall supportability rating for each team we have simply averaged each country’s position across all of the criteria. In no way should this be interpreted as an overall ranking of how ‘good’ or ‘bad’ we think a country is. Whoshouldicheerfor.com is not a scientific rating of the policies of these countries in the field of international development and the environment. No attempt has been made to weight the various criteria according to their relative importance. It is intended to be a fun and interesting way to think about a serious issue – that of global poverty and the inequality between the nations competing in the World Cup. Please take it in that spirit.
